Helping Companies to Utilize Diversity as a Strategic Lever for Growth and Innovation
As a company, CCI believes in broadening the definition of diversity beyond concepts of race, gender, and nationality to include “all the ways that we are similar and different to one another.” This expanded view of diversity includes: ethnicity, sexual orientation, generation, physical and mental ability, and parental status – to name a few. By including everyone, giving everyone a stake in the “diversity” definition, it means that no one is excluded from the conversation on diversity.

The old model of diversity training utilizes a philosophy of “us understanding them.” This outdated philosophy is replaced with CCI’s philosophy of “us understanding us.”
Under this philosophy, every single employee has a voice in the diversity discussion. This paradigm shift creates a new understanding of diversity’s role in a company, with each employee’s unique background contributing measurable value in their work place and ultimately in the global market place.
"Only 30% of HR professionals reported their organizations had an official definition of diversity." (SHRM, The State of Diversity Management 2007)
One of the most important and essential steps in launching and running a successful diversity initiative at your company is developing a definition for the word diversity. Surprisingly, many companies embark on diversity initiatives, diversity programming or diversity training without first developing a meaningful definition of diversity that resonates for their company.
Without an official definition of diversity employees are left to develop their own definition for diversity, which can lead to confusion. If your company does not have a definition of diversity then use the opportunity of developing a definition to create awareness and visibility for your diversity initiative. Recruit employees from throughout the company to participate in a committee that is tasked with the creation of your company's definition of diversity. It will engage employees and create high levels of buy-in.
