Examples of Training and Workshop Topics

Introduction to Culture and Cultural Identity
An overview of how culture impacts our daily lives, framing and shaping our opinions, perceptions and the values by which we live. Using a model developed by the Culture Coach, participants are able to explore their own cultural identities and the identities of the other participants. Through this exercise, participants learn how their values and filters impact their decisions and interactions with others.

Making the Business Case for Diversity
The demographics of the US are changing. This workshop explores the impact of the changing demographics upon organization's and their bottom line.

Exploring Diversity
Using the Diversity Egg exercise, participants explore their perceptions about diversity, expanding it from the traditional categories of race, age and sex. This gives participants an opportunity to explore their fears about people from "other" groups and to shift the idea of diversity from "us understanding them" to "us understanding us".

Recruitment and Retention
Today's workforce is diverse and traditional recruitment efforts do not always yield a diverse talent pool. This workshop explores the topic of recruitment in today's multicultural marketplace and how to improve retention of diverse employees once they are within the organization.

Learning About Group Cultures
Using the game Barnga, this workshop gives participants an opportunity to experience what it feels like to be an outsider to a group culture. This activity helps participants to how to be welcoming to people coming into a strong group culture. (Requires at least 15 people).

Organizational Culture
Every organization has a culture that is unique to it. Understanding what the organizational culture is and how to shape it to benefit the organization in the best way can be challenging. Using an experiential activity, participants are able to examine how they view the organizational culture. Follow-up discussions give an opportunity for participants to understand how to create a culture that is beneficial and productive.

Multicultural Leadership
As workforces become more diverse, it is increasingly important that leaders understand how culture impacts leadership styles and expectations. his workshop examines leadership styles around the world and how culture impacts leadership in today's diverse marketplace.

Cross Cultural Communication
Communication is key to all interactions, and understanding the nuances of our interactions is critical to successful communication. Participants will explore cultural styles found in the world and learn how this impacts communication. They will also examine the impact of non-verbal communication across cultures.

World Religions
An opportunity to explore the religions of the world is offered in this overview which examines the basic tenets, days of sabbath, major holidays and beliefs for 6 of the major world religions.

Immigrants and Refugees
Anyone moving to a new country faces challenges, and for immigrants and refugees coming to the USA they are no exception. Starting with a history of immigration, this workshop examines the current immigrant trends and numbers, what the challenges are for immigrants coming to the US, issues to be aware of when bringing immigrants into your workforce and how refugees face a different set of challenges and opportunities in the USA.

Managing a Multicultural Workforce
Every day managers seek to motivate, manage and lead their employees effectively. A multicultural workforce brings both opportunities and challenges for a manager. Through case studies and discussions participants explore issues such as religious differences, extended vacations and the Family Leave Act and other pertinent topics.

Diversity Terms and Meanings
The vocabulary of diversity is constantly evolving and changing. This workshop examines this history of diversity terms, what current terms are in use and how terms convey both obvious and hidden meanings.

Examining Race
Using the video A Class Divided as a starting point for discussion, this workshop explores the topic of race in a way that encourages participation and that looks at how it impacts personal interactions.

Global Healthcare
There are three main categories in how people view healthcare (Western/Scientific, Holistic, Supernatural). This workshop examines each view and ask participants to examine their own views on healthcare.

Introduction to the Hispanic/Latino Culture
The Hispanic/Latino culture is not just one culture, but one that is varied and diverse. This workshop explores similarities and differences that exist in the world of the Hispanic/Lattino culture and the countries and cultures.

Introduction to the African American Culture
Using the interactive African American timeline and scavenger hunt created by the Culture Coach, this program gives participants an opportunity to learn about the African American history and how this impacts African Americans today. Through a scavenger hunt, participants learn about African Americans who made a difference in our history.

Introduction to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Community
An introduction to the GLBT community including information about using gender neutral language, creating a respectful workplace and communication tips.
